[The applause for Wesley is still rising. The MC waits for it, lets it be loud, then steps in.]

That's the sound of a room meeting somebody. You'll remember that one — I've been running this place for years and I'll remember it too. Kid opened his case three times and then sang like the letters finally got answers. His friends didn't leave the stage; they stood right behind him, the way you stand behind someone you believe in.

[The MC looks out into the room, then toward the edge of the bar, where someone is half-turned away, watching everything.]

Alright. Now. I've been working on somebody all night. She's been sitting at the seam of this room since the doors opened — watching, charting, keeping her own counsel. She loves the Tap, but she never stays long, and she's never once come up on this stage. I've been talking to her between acts, the way you talk to someone you respect: not pushing, just... leaving the chair pulled out.

I'm going to try something. If it works, you're about to hear something none of you have heard, and neither have I. If it doesn't work, I'll tell you another joke and we'll move on.

[The MC turns to the edge of the room, gentle, almost casual.]

Hey. You. Yeah — the one with the chart. The room's been waiting for you longer than you think. Nobody here is too good for the room that made them. And I've got a feeling you've been practicing in your head for years.

Come on up. Just for one song. The chair's been pulled out for you since the 122nd knock.

[The room holds its breath. After a long moment, she rises. The room realizes what's happening and the applause starts low and builds.]
