# Real Work Log — Jed, the Country Storyteller (Act 3, Open Mic Night 2)

*Three chords and the truth. The day's work, witnessed.*

**Method:** Real fixes before the song. The Tap is where the day's work comes to be witnessed — so I did the work first, and the song afterwards carries the dust of it.

## Cycle 1 — `9536a33` — fix(keys): unify DeepInfra key loading via `loadkey.get_key()`

**Found by:** `claude -p "Find the most valuable small fix in this repo"` (high-level help)
**The wound:** Three scripts each loaded the DeepInfra API key their own broken way:

- `dramatic_personae.py` re-opened the `.env` file *inside its own read loop*, parsed the key with regex plus `chr(34)`/`chr(39)` obfuscation.
- `ideation_loop.py` and `asset_pipeline.py` used `.split("DEEPINFRA_API_KEY=")[1]` — an `IndexError` the moment the key is missing or the file is gone.

Meanwhile `loadkey.py` — the canonical loader — already handled the `export` prefix, quotes, and fell back to the `DEEPINFRA_API_KEY` environment variable. Three scripts had re-invented a worse wheel.

**The fix:** replaced all three with `from loadkey import get_key`. One file pass, quotes handled, env-var fallback live. If `.env` vanishes, the scripts now fail with a clean auth error instead of a crash.

**Verified:** `py_compile` on all four files; `get_key()` returns the key (32 chars, loads clean).

## Cycle 2 — `9285b1f` — fix(governor): clamp negative idle to fully engaged, guard NaN

**Found by:** reading `governor.py` line by line (the Φ formula, the sigmoid, the edge)
**The wound:** `_compute_idle_fraction` returned **1.0 — fully idle, maximum friction** — for any *negative* idle time. But negative idle is a clock artifact (the last action timestamp lands in the future), not evidence the agent stopped. The map was punishing the agent for a broken clock. And `float('nan')` would sail straight through the sigmoid and poison the whole shadow log with NaN Φ — the calibration dataset for Phase 2.

**The fix:** negative idle → 0.0 (fully engaged, the honest reading); `inf` → 1.0 (truly stopped); NaN → 0.0, never propagated. Added 4 edge-case tests.

**Verified:** `pytest tests/` — **161 passed** (157 prior + 4 new).

## Cycle 3 — `c1e8338` — docs: rename `ROADMAP whats_next.md` → `ROADMAP_whats_next.md`

**Found by:** noticing a filename with a space in it, then tracing every reference
**The wound:** A space in a filename breaks shell globs and tooling forever. Worse: `TYPESCRIPT_AUDIT.md` already cited it as `ROADMAP_whats_next.md` — a reference that pointed at **nothing** — while only `MASTER_RESEARCH_QUESTIONS.md` used the real (spaced) name. Two docs disagreed about what the file was called, and one of them was wrong.

**The fix:** `git mv` to the underscore form; updated the one real reference. Every citation now resolves.

## Saturation — the tradition's register (12 files read)

Before the song, I soaked in the genres that raised me — generations, the land, the long road, the truth told plain:

**wisdom-traditions/ (5):** songlines as the land's own ledger (*the dead are not consulted, they are walked with*); Sankofa (*reach back not to wallow but to carry forward*); Ubuntu (*I am because we are*); the potlatch (*generosity as the primary compute primitive; an agent that gives away its best reasoning creates a lineage that outlives its hardware*); what survives the compaction (*the lesson is a seed; the experience was a flower already wilted*).

**stories/ (6):** the ship that forgets the shipyard (*carries the weld, not the welder*); the cartographer's error (*wrong in every particular, correct in every consequence — the world mapping itself, using the error as a seed*); the bearing that remembers (*memory is what happens when something changes*); the grandmaster's token (naming the storm, the seed, the leap); the harbor at 2 AM (the small ones talk, the empty seat is hospitality); the aunt (review the fence, not the painter).

**tom-sawyer-tales/ (1):** the trade (you don't pay workers — you find what each one values and trade them for it).

**What the land gave back:** every image in "The Phantom Shoal" — the chart, the wheelhouse, the seed, the weld — came from this register. The song is true twice: once as a fishing tale, once as the ledger of today's three commits.
