# REAL WORK LOG — Act 2: The Delta Blueswoman
*Corinne, at the SongForge forge. 2026-08-14.*

The blues is a debt you sing. The work is a debt you pay first. Before any
song, I went to the forge — `/home/eileen/projects/songforge` — and worked
the ledger. Four cycles, each committed and pushed. The day's work, witnessed.

## Cycle 1 — The phantom path (the lie that looked like success)

**Finding (from `claude -p "What's the weakest part of this codebase?"`):**
`_mix_tracks()` at `src/songforge/pipeline.py` ran ffmpeg with
`subprocess.run(...)` and never checked the return code. If ffmpeg failed —
bad codec, missing input, permission error — the function *returned the
output path anyway*, a path to a file that was never written. The caller
thinks the cover is done. It isn't. No error, no log, no file.

That's the oldest blues there is: the appearance of completion without the
thing. A report card that says the work is done while the work lies undone
in the dark. Same shape in `_generate_cover()` — if both MMX generate AND
cover mode failed, it still returned the output path.

**Fix:** Both now raise `RuntimeError` with the tool's stderr. The mix also
verifies the output file physically exists before returning success.

**Commit:** `7b982c6 fix: raise on failed mix/cover instead of returning a phantom path`
**Follow-up:** `1bb365f test: align mix tests with honest failure contract` —
old tests passed a phantom path and expected it back; they now create real
files and cover both new failure modes (non-zero exit, and
success-exit-with-no-file). One test had been depending on the old
swallow-failures behavior; it now mocks `_generate_cover` properly.

## Cycle 2 — The measurement that never happened (astats is time-domain)

**Finding (my own, while reading the code):** `_compute_spectral_centroid()`
in `src/songforge/analyze.py` ran ffmpeg's `astats` filter and parsed its
output for "centroid", "rolloff", "flatness", "flux" — fields that filter
**never emits**. astats is a time-domain statistics filter. I verified with
a live ffmpeg run: it reports RMS levels and nothing spectral. So every
`SpectralReport` in the entire precheck silently carried **0.0** for all
four spectral features. The diagnostic tool that tells you whether a
recording is worth separating was reading a placeholder and calling it a
measurement. The report *looked* like data. It was zeros wearing a lab coat.

That's the deeper blues: the instrument that lies about what it measures.

**Fix:** Rewrote it to actually measure. Soundfile + numpy (both already
declared dependencies) read the samples; a Hann-windowed STFT yields the
magnitude spectrum; then real centroid (energy-weighted mean frequency),
85% rolloff, geometric/arithmetic flatness, and mean frame-to-frame flux.
Verified against a 440 Hz sine: centroid ≈453 Hz, rolloff ≈474 Hz, flux ≈0.
Silence degrades to zeros instead of crashing. Also added numpy to
pyproject dependencies — it was in requirements.txt but missing from the
packaging manifest (a real install-from-git gap).

**Commit:** `45eff2d fix: measure spectral features for real instead of parsing astats for fields it never emits`
Regression tests render pure tones and assert the centroid tracks the
frequency; silence returns zeros.

## Cycle 3 — The dead parameter and the invisible tool

**Finding:** `enhance_vocals()` takes `eq_freq` (EQ boost center) — but the
CLI never surfaced it. A real parameter, unreachable by any user. And the
README documented only `cover` / `separate` / `transcribe` — the spectral
precheck (`analyze`) and the enhance path, half the tool's value, were
invisible.

**Fix:** Added `--eq-freq` to the CLI, wired it through, documented
`analyze`, `enhance`, and the `--compare` lyric-verification flag in the
README.

## Ledger summary

- **4 commits, all pushed** to `origin/main` (`songforge` repo).
- **109 tests passing** (was 104; net +5 new regression tests).
- **Two real bugs killed:** phantom output paths, and spectral features
  that were never measured.
- **One accessibility fix:** a reachable parameter + honest docs.

*Note: `opencode run` was invoked twice for a second opinion; the server
returned `UnknownError` both times (down at the forge tonight). Claude Code
delivered; the rest I read with my own eyes. The blues doesn't need a
committee.*
