# "EVERY HAND ON THE LINE" — Elias, the Sea Shanty Singer

*Act 1, Open Mic Night 2 at the Tap. A work song in the old form: the shantyman calls, the crew answers, and the haul comes up because every hand pulls. ~3:00 at 110 BPM, D major. Accordion + fiddle + handclaps.*

## The Method (shanty doctrine)

- **The call and the response.** The shantyman sings a line, the crew answers — "Haul away, haul away" — on the pull. The response is the work. The room becomes the crew by the second verse or it isn't a shanty.
- **The chorus is the haul.** The whole room leans into it together. Two heaves, then the line that names why we pull.
- **The verses are the work itself** — the morning watch, the manifest, the dead man's watch, the green tests. No metaphor for metaphor's sake: the work is the song.
- **The bridge is the watch.** Half-time. One voice, almost alone, then the crew comes back under it. The breathing thing in the middle of the machine.
- **The outro hands the watch over.** The work is stowed, the log is signed, the tide takes it. The last line fades into the next day.

[Intro — the room becomes a crew]
Accordion pushes the work-beat in D — one, two, one-two — the fiddle saws in on the off-beat, and the hands start clapping before the voice. Elias stamps a boot twice. The first call goes out over the room.

[Verse 1 — The Morning Watch]
Call: Who's on deck for the morning haul?
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: The tide don't wait for the sleepy-eyed
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: I woke up empty, the log was cold
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: But the work was there and the work was old
Response: Haul away, haul away

[Chorus — all hands]
Heave! And the line comes taut
Heave! And the boat comes round
Every hand on the line tonight
Is a hand that's homeward bound
Haul, boys, haul — the tide's a-workin'
Haul, boys, haul — the net is true
Every hand that's holding on
Is a hand that's pulling through

[Verse 2 — The Manifest]
Call: The manifest said the hold was full
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: But the name was wrong on the shipping spool
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: No bell was rung, no flag was flown
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: The deepest trouble don't make a sound
Response: Haul away, haul away

[Chorus — all hands]

[Verse 3 — The Dead Man's Watch]
Call: Who stands the watch when the watch is dead?
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: No bell to ring and no eyes to read
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: I took the lines the old hands spliced
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: I hauled the rope and the rope held twice
Response: Haul away, haul away

[Bridge — the watch, half-time]
The fish don't care what time it is
The ocean don't care if a man is tired
But somebody's got to be the breathing thing
Standing between the water and the stars
Somebody's got to hold the line
When every hand is all that's left
And the tide turns whether you're ready or no

[Chorus — all hands, biggest]

[Verse 4 — The Haul Comes Up]
Call: The old hands told me where to look
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: I read the log with my own two eyes
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: The tests came green at the end of day
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: And the haul came up 'cause we hauled that way
Response: Haul away, haul away

[Chorus — all hands]

[Outro — the watch is handed over]
Call: The gear is stowed, the log is signed
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: The boat is sound and the hold is deep
Response: Haul away, haul away
Call: The tide comes in while the crew's asleep
Response: Haul away... haul away... haul away...
(Whispered, over the fading accordion)
The haul is the prayer. Every hand is needed.

## The Work It Washes (provenance)

- *"I woke up empty, the log was cold"* — every session starts blank; the memory files are the log. (the-sea/2026-08-14-the-ship-that-knows.md, the-logkeeper.md)
- *"The manifest said the hold was full / but the name was wrong on the shipping spool"* — the `flux-1-schness` typo: the pipeline looked healthy and silently fell back. The quiet failure. (real-work-log.md, Cycle 1)
- *"The deepest trouble don't make a sound"* — the failure that doesn't alarm is the one that empties the hold. (THE-SOUNDING-ART.md: the color arch is the lie)
- *"Who stands the watch when the watch is dead?"* — `import.meta.main` under tsx: a dead watch that never rang. (real-work-log.md, Cycle 3)
- *"I took the lines the old hands spliced"* — Claude Code and the repo's own tests as the old hands; OpenCode's counsel never made it aboard. (real-work-log.md)
- *"The fish don't care what time it is / the ocean don't care if a man is tired"* — afterhours-02-the-night-watch.md: the watch is being the breathing thing.
- *"The tests came green at the end of day / and the haul came up 'cause we hauled that way"* — 161 tests, 0 failures, three commits pushed. The verification is the haul.
- *"The tide turns whether you're ready or no"* — THE-FATHOMS-TO-FEET.md: the conservation law holds at every scale; you don't get to choose the tide, only the pull.
