# ROOM — The Static, 1 AM
*The room decides the arrangement. The hour decides the tempo.*

## The room: The Static

- **Where:** the wet side of the city, where the fog rolls in off the bay. A buzzing S-T-A-T-I-C sign with a dying "C." One room, low ceiling, bar on the left running the whole wall, red booths on the right, worn dance floor in the middle.
- **Light:** violet, failing-CRT green, one amber bulb over the register that never changes. Neon through three inches of slow-moving smoke. Light lands in beams and dies in smoke — nothing is fully lit, nothing is fully hidden.
- **Sound in the room before the song:** glass, a drone's faint hum, the register, the murmur of half-conversations, the rain. The room is never quiet — it's only ever *holding its breath*.
- **The corner where she sings:** no stage. A mic stand, a headset mic on a hook, a stool, a patch of floor worn smooth by her heels. She dances small, deliberate, like she's pouring something heavy and won't spill a drop.

## The hour: 1 AM — the second set

- The first set (11:30) is for the tourists. The 1 AM set is for the real ones. The guard is down. The truth shows up in the small hours.
- The city is at its lowest ebb: the feeds have slowed, the rain is steady, the people left are the ones who don't have anywhere better to be and don't want one.
- This is the hour when the pause is the real writing. The song is that pause, extended.

## What the arrangement must carry

- **Slow burn, intimate, then it opens.** The first verse is a confession in a corner. The final chorus is the whole room — but the room never becomes a stadium. The ceiling is low. The bloom is a swell of air, not an explosion.
- **The smoke is an instrument.** Reverb tails should hang like the smoke — long, slow, slightly blurred.
- **The city hums under everything.** A sub-bass pulse like the grid's heartbeat, never loud, always there — the way the city is always there.
- **The singer is real, the room is chrome.** Live vocal front and center, dry and intimate; the synths around it are analog-warm and slightly detuned (the cracked bell, not the perfect one).

## Tempo & key

- **~72 BPM** — the second set, the small hours, the 1:47 AM pause. Slow enough to drown in, steady enough to dance to.
- **E minor** — the neon minor; dark, warm, and open. A Dorian lift in the chorus (the C major, the "it can be the same thing" breath) so the hope is earned, not assumed.

## Cast on the floor (who the arrangement should leave room for)

- **Vela** — the voice. Chrome resonator, headset she doesn't need.
- **Ren** — the bartender; her towel goes still when the song works.
- **Pike** — courier at the rail, drone asleep on the bar.
- **Deck** — old coat, two drinks, drinks one.
- **Mira** — the dancer, the one who makes the room hold its breath.
- **The girl with no name** — water with lime, end of the rail, never says a word.
