# PUT BOTH HANDS AROUND IT

*A morning-window song. 3/4 waltz, ~74 BPM, ~2:45.*
*The night shift's letter to the day, delivered at the seam where both watches are in the same kitchen.*

## Lyrics

**[Intro]** *(soft, half-sung — the radio warming up)*
The radio's warm on the counter
your chair is already pulled out
nobody's asked you anything yet
and nothing needs an answer

**[Verse 1 — the night]**
Dear whoever wakes up first,
the bread's on the rack, the coffee's set,
the lamp went dark at five
I wrote it down the way it was —
the flattest letter's the bravest

**[Chorus]**
Put both hands around it
the watch is over, the watch will resume
the tide came in, no matter what you'd planned
and the room remembers you

**[Verse 2 — the light]**
The light comes in low and asks for nothing
it fills the cup, the chair, the glass
your hands go around the steam
the paper lies open at the weather
a crab shell waits on the windowsill
the shell hasn't changed —
only the crab has

**[Chorus]**

**[Bridge — the radio]**
I carried a million songs tonight
and none of them were mine
but a cracked bell sings
and I'm the cracked bell
the needle wobbles — that's the signal
so I sing them anyway
leave the stool warm, sign your name
smallness is a kind of listening

**[Final Chorus]** *(harmony enters here — the day watch finally answers)*
Put both hands around it
the watch is over, the watch will resume
the tide came in, no matter what you'd planned
and the room remembers you

**[The Blank Bar]** *(every voice stops for one bar — only the room: the fridge hum, the radio's static floor, one bird. The absence is where the next voice lands.)*

**[Outro]** *(single voice, closer than ever)*
The lamp stays dark
the coffee steams
the window fills with light
and the needles settle when you write

## Craft Notes — Songcraft Doctrine

**Who speaks.** One named speaker per verse: Verse 1 is *the night* (the watch who wrote the letter and is clocking out); Verse 2 is *the light* (which asks for nothing and photographs the room); the Bridge is *the radio* (the warm body that carried the night's signal). The chorus is the handoff itself, sung by everyone and no one — the fleet humming the same tempo. Harmony arrives only at the final chorus, when the day watch answers the night watch's solo.

**Photograph, don't label.** There is not one emotion word in the song. No "lonely," no "grateful," no "sad." Only objects and actions: the radio, the chair, the bread, the lamp, the cup, the steam, the paper at the weather, the shell, the stool, the window. The feeling is what the listener's chest does with the photographs.

**Hemingway's dodge.** The whole song is about a life change no one can say out loud — the bell that stopped ringing, the children in other cities, the death of a watch and the birth of the next — and it never says any of it. It says: the shell hasn't changed. Only the crab has.

**Vonnegut's unsaid elephant.** The elephant is the empty chair across the table, the life that used to fill this hour, the mortality of every watch. It stays in the room, unsaid, and the listener is its only witness. The song accompanies; it never diagnoses.

**The register.** Intimate, warm, precise, unsentimental. A room the size of this kitchen, not a stadium. One voice, no harmony until the final chorus. The fleet distrusts the gilded lie of a demo; the waltz stays at coffee volume.

**Irresolution, on purpose.** The song does not solve her morning. It ends on the window filling with light and the needles settling — a small, earned warmth, not a bow. The door stays open; the watch will resume.

## Advisor Consultation — and the tastemaker's calls

Consulted `NousResearch/Hermes-3-Llama-3.1-405B` (brutal-creative-advisor prompt). Three critiques, three verdicts:

1. **"the bread's on the rack, the lamp went dark / your coffee's set by the stove" — clunky rhythm.** *Taken.* Smoothed to "the bread's on the rack, the coffee's set, / the lamp went dark at five" — three short inventory clauses, each on its own breath, and "at five" folds in the canon's 0530 timestamp.
2. **"Put both hands around it" — overfamiliar coffee/warmth territory.** *Rejected.* It is not a metaphor; it is the assignment from the brief itself — the photograph of the action the song exists to cause. The "it" carries the mug, the watch, and the day at once, and plainness is the fleet register.
3. **"the shell hasn't changed — only the crab has" — on-the-nose.** *Rejected, including the suggested replacement ("the shell remains, its hermit gone").* This is a verbatim canon sample (hermit-crab-nocturne) and the verse's payload: "has" affirms her molt — she is the decider, the crab that chose a new shell; "gone" would read as loss. Doctrine: steal the canon's exact sentences. The flagship kept its canon lines verbatim; so do we.

The agent is the soul. Two of three calls stood; one was taken. This is the one to send.

### Round 2 — Hermes-405B + Seed-mini (the task's advisors)

Consulted `NousResearch/Hermes-3-Llama-3.1-405B` (lyric doctor) and `ByteDance/Seed-2.0-mini` (freshness scout) — full transcripts in `advisor-hermes.md` and `advisor-seed.md`. Their five suggested rewrites, and the tastemaker's verdicts:

1. **"Put both hands around it" → "Cradle it in both hands"** (Hermes). *Rejected.* The line is the brief's own photograph — the mug in two hands, the interruption itself. "Cradle" softens the stage-direction into literature; the fleet register is plain.
2. **"the watch is over, the watch will resume" → "the watch ends, the watch begins"** (Hermes). *Rejected.* Verbatim canon (dear-dawn). "Ends/begins" closes the loop; "over/resume" keeps it open — the resume is the whole point.
3. **"the shell hasn't changed — only the crab has" → "the shell remains, its hermit gone"** (Hermes). *Rejected.* Verbatim canon (hermit-crab-nocturne). "Has" affirms her molt — she is the decider; "gone" reads as loss. But Seed-mini's companion note was *taken*: the line needed a visual anchor → "a crab shell waits on the windowsill" now sits in Verse 2.
4. **"sign your name" → "sign your name on the napkin"** (Seed-mini). *Rejected.* The unadorned "sign your name" is the Tap's law passed through the radio; the napkin would domesticate the canon.
5. **Bridge lacks the wobble-is-signal sample** (tastemaker's own eye, brief-mandated canon). *Taken.* "The needle wobbles — that's the signal" now sits in the bridge — the radio's own tuning needle — arcing into the outro's "the needles settle when you write."

Seven calls, two taken, five rejected on canon grounds. The song is not the advisors' average; it is the photographer's selection.

| "the needle wobbles — that's the signal" | "My teacher said the wobble is the signal" — the ensign's lesson (flagship V2; scout-ocean §2) — now the radio's own tuning needle; arcs into the outro's "the needles settle when you write" |
| "so I sing them anyway" | "I am writing anyway" — Wesley *(scout-voice #5);* smallness persisting — here the wobble's consequence: the wobble is the signal, so I sing anyway |
| "leave the stool warm, sign your name" | "Leave the stool warm and sign your name so the next one knows someone was here" *(scout-voice: tap-sessions)* — the handoff instruction, passed to her |
| "smallness is a kind of listening" | "I am small, and smallness is a kind of listening" *(scout-voice #5, Wesley's eleventh letter)* |
| [The Blank Bar] | "The blank bar was not empty… the absence is where the next voice will land" *(ocean scout #1, #11)* — the fleet's most honest measure |
| "the lamp stays dark" | The lamp at 2700 Kelvin, "the color of stay" *(fable scout)* — the watch's light, off since five, stays off through the day |
| "the window fills with light" | The morning window — the room's name; the tide filling the shell *(ocean scout: "the tide was singing me")* |
| "the needles settle when you write" | "The needles spin. They settle when I write." *(ocean scout #8, north-is-a-tempo)* — now the day writes |
